Hurricane Helene was devastating and so far the government emergency response hasn't been nearly what we had hoped. The aftermath left my neighborhood in shambles, but nothing could have prepared us for the eerie silence that followed. All my neighbors were dead.

The first episode of We Live Here Now, a new podcast from The Atlantic, could not have captured the somber atmosphere that now looms over our once lively neighborhood. The streets that used to bustle with activity are now eerily quiet, with no signs of life.

Police are investigating after the body of a 40-year-old woman was found in an alleyway behind homes in Philadelphia's Frankford neighborhood on Sunday morning. The tragic loss of yet another neighbor further solidified the grim reality that now enveloped our once vibrant community.

Someone sprayed a home with gunfire, wounding five people. Three of them were children. One child later died. The heartbreaking news of the innocent lives lost within our neighborhood only added to the overwhelming sense of grief and sorrow that now hung heavily in the air.
